Now that I’m well into the third trimester of my third pregnancy, I feel like I can officially say that I know what I’m talking about when it comes to keeping my body fit through pregnancy and what products are helpful or not for me. I’ve been carrying this boy for 32 weeks now, and although I suffered hyperemesis gravidarum for the first 19 weeks, I’ve been able to stay healthy (off the couch and off saltines, ginger beer, and an IV) since about the halfway point. Eek! I can’t believe we are on the home stretch to holding our 3rd son!
Here are the top 7 products I love to help keep me fit and comfortable through pregnancy. Let me know if there are any items you love that I didn’t mention.
1. A High Quality Yoga Mat
If you don’t already have a good yoga mat, pregnancy is a fantastic time to invest in one. Your body will be sore and in need of extra stretching time. As your baby grows larger, your body is going to require more low impact workouts, which will put you on the floor, and trust me — you want something squishy and with good grip to keep you comfortable, moving, and supported. I used to have the cheapest one I could find from Fred Meyer, and after a few months the little grippy parts on it started falling off and it easily became slippery. I really like this one by Gaiam.
2. A Soft Foam Roller
This is a product I was reluctant to purchase, but did so at my chiropractor’s recommendation. My body is so glad I listened. You want a soft density foam roller because your pregnant body is producing extra hormones that are relaxing your muscles, so this isn’t the time to overstretch you. I use this to help open my back and shoulders, which is something you NEED in pregnancy and once the baby is born. It’s also amazing for all of my leg, hip, butt, and low back discomfort.
3. Supportive Maternity Clothes
My first pregnancy I did everything I could to NOT buy maternity clothes for as long as possible. Once I finally did, I really wished I had just gone ahead and purchased high quality maternity clothes sooner. During my second pregnancy, I finally splurged on a few key pieces for exercise and I’m so glad I did. They have lasted through my second and third pregnancy, and I have even loaned them to a couple friends for the end of their pregnancies. The cheaper items I had bought initially, started wearing after just one pregnancy between the legs, at the seams, or they stretched out and wouldn’t stay up on me.
I have two different pairs of maternity workout capris that I LOVE. The first pair is by Ingrid and Isabel and fit me perfectly. They somehow manage to be incredibly supportive for my bump, but also don’t dig in anywhere. The second pair I have by Mumberry and they are very flattering on my thighs, and I love the pocket along the side. My iPhone fits in it easily and they don’t droop from the weight of it.
I also have a long sleeve shirt by Ingrid and Isabel that I love for layering throughout my whole pregnancy and postpartum because of the material, breath-ability, and because it has thumb-holes, which I love for getting outside. And how cute is this jacket? It allows your stomach to grow and shrink with side zippers! This would be perfect for cool fall or spring times.
Do your feet and legs ache during pregnancy? Okay, maybe try whole body? Magnesium is one of my secrets to easing my sore muscles, and as a big bonus, it supports my entire system.
Did you know your skin is your largest organ? Magnesium is an incredibly popular and highly needed supplement, but as always, check in with your doctor before adding in any supplements. When working out or even just pregnant, I love this magnesium spray. Again, higher quality magnesium is going to give you a better absorption rate, be more effective, and last longer.
Why do you want to use magnesium spray during pregnancy? Well, magnesium supports over a hundred different functions that your body needs. Taking an Epsom salt bath or using magnesium lotion or spray can help with muscle soreness, poor digestion, restless legs, blood pressure, and insomnia. I use this kind by Ancient Minerals by spraying a few spritzes on my feet a few times a day and have noticed a huge improvements relaxing at bedtime and an improvement in my restless legs caused by pregnancy.
5. Skin Toning Oil
Everyone is worried about stretch marks during pregnancy, and while I do use lotion/oil heavily throughout pregnancy to moisturize, there really isn’t evidence to show that lotion helps prevent stretch marks. However, during the third trimester my body starts to get extremely dry and itchy and I start to get desperate. I usually just use coconut oil for, well everything, but it wasn’t cutting it and that is where Mother’s Special Blend comes in. IT IS AMAZING and your itchy pregnant body will thank you for this! Especially if you’re taking a lot of baths or showers, this will really replenish and moisturize your growing body without all of the extra chemicals found in many lotions targeted to pregnant women. It’s a blend of almond oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and vitamin E.
6. Belly Band
The Upsie Belly is one splurge I finally made this pregnancy and my irritable uterus and low back are so thankful I decided to try it out. This belly band velcros around you to get the perfect fit, has high quality material, and has a pocket in the back for an ice pack or hot pack. In my experience, it doesn’t fold down or cut into me. Instead, it holds my belly up off of my bladder a little and helps with round ligament pain.
7. Sports Headband
I received this BLOM headband for Christmas last year, and I absolutely love it. I use it while working out, or just because my hair is a little greasy. It doesn’t slip off while running, but it’s not so tight that it hurts my head. You can also wear it a bunch of different ways to change up the look. This is a serious “fit mom” must have.
